To restore and keep the public’s confidence in the integrity of their government, officials must be open, honest and transparent.

At a recent Cameron City Council meeting, a motion was made to move forward with an agenda item. A public informational meeting was also attached to the motion. The mayor stated “We want to keep this topic open and transparent as there is considerable cost assigned to it”.

Later in the meeting, before a vote was taken, one councilman got up from his seat and left the room. He had removed himself from a possible conflict of interest vote. My Congratulations go to the council members for the ethical handling of these issues.

On the other hand, the DeKalb County commissioners and clerk have a myriad of problems. This is evident with the large number of letters published each week in the paper and personal visits to commission meetings. The problems are laid out and then excuses are made later in the body of the commissioner’s minutes without context. This all started and currently continues with the lack of open dialogue, public input and lack of transparency.

If you expect more from your elected officials, remember the upcoming elections. The open election spots have been posted along with the filing dates for candidacy.  Weekly reminders will be reported. If you have ever said to yourself “I ought to run for office and stop complaining”, now is your chance. Leadership is not about the next election, but about the next generation.
