Letter to the Editor
Dear Editor,
My name is Mary JoAnn Williams. I am the mayor of Cowgill, elected by the people in June 2020. As of today, I have not been sworn in as the mayor. At the June meeting, I was accused of giving a threat to a citizen. This incident did involve my grandkids. I was not there. I was asked to resign my position as mayor. I left my keys on the table, I walked out. I was sick; I never resigned my position. I returned for the July meeting, took my chair as the mayor. The date was changed from July 15 to July 10, and in the June meeting minutes was called for July 17 at 7 p.m. When I entered the city hall on July 10, at 7 p.m., I know this was a setup. I stayed until the Marshall ordered me to leave, but I would not leave until I was given the June minutes. As I was waiting, the yelling went on. A person lunged at me. I stood there until I did get the June minutes. The law was called. They came down to the house.
I got in contact with the State. This is what it says. Now remember, I never signed any paper or ever spoke the words, “I resign.” “The resignation from a public official must be a voluntary act. It cannot be done under duress or coercion.” By the way, I never stole a dog kennel or a basketball goal.
I will be at the August 17 meeting at 7 p.m. There is not an entry in the June minutes that I left the city hall. I do appreciate the work that volunteers have done in the city, but when the rules are bent, it’s time to mention what is good for one should be good for all.
Everyone is welcome to attend the city meeting. Come on citizens of Cowgill. Please take an interest. This is your home and you do have a say.
Thank you,
Acting Mayor, Mary JoAnn Williams
I did visit Polo, Kingston, Hamilton, and Braymer. They were very helpful in giving me a copy of the monthly agenda. Thank you, Mary.
