Letter to the Editor:

If the health insurance bill currently before the U.S. Senate passes, cuts in Medicaid could cause rural hospitals all over the country to close.

One adverse result of this I have heard neither Democrats nor Republicans mention. Closure of these hospitals would result in massive layoffs.

The regional facility in my area employs 425 workers. Should these workers lose their jobs, the government will lose the tax revenues these workers generate. Multiply this by all the rural facilities across our country, and this would be a considerable financial loss to governments already concerned about shrinking revenues and rising deficits.

I have been a patient in our regional medical center for nearly ten years. I have seen first hand how many workers it takes to keep our facility up and running – medical workers, office staff, food service, custodial and maintenance staff, van drivers. The list goes on and on.
These hardworking, caring people do not deserve to lose their jobs. Nor can governments afford the loss of tax revenue that removing these people from our workforce would cause. The medical profession is one of our country’s largest employers.
President Trump promised to create jobs – not annihilate them.

Sincerely,
Laura Guinan, Polo
