Breckenridge News by Sondra Gaunt

The Breckenridge R-I Board of Education held their regular meeting on Oct. 10, 2016 in the FACS room. President Terri Adams called the meeting to order. The agenda and consent agenda were both approved. The board heard a thank you note from Mrs. Renata Skinner for flowers from the district for her recent surgery.
The board discussed the extra-curricular program with Mr. Ed Fry, athletic director. Mr. Fry reported on the football cooperative agreement with Braymer. Currently the districts are working together for 8 man junior high and varsity football. He stated that the season has gone well for these activities. He reported that junior high basketball would see that the school was only fielding a boys’ team with two girls playing on this team. He gave the board an update on varsity basketball, uniform purchases, and a community garden project. The garden idea is a service project for the student athletes and others.
In other work, the board approved the district participating in a Section 125 Plan for its employees. The board discussed the concept of a school resource officer. The board had questions about such a position and voted to table this item for a more detailed discussion in November. The board discussed Halloween safety and decided not to allow clown related costumes this year in light of recent developments. Mr. Skinner shared Annual Performance Report (APR) data with the board. APR data improved by 4 percentage points for the district over last year’s numbers. Mr. Skinner attributed this to improvement of MAP and EOC scores. The board will have a discussion of test scores in November. The board also was informed by Mr. Skinner of the increase in employee health insurance premiums. There will be a 7.62% increase for the renewal.
The next regular meeting of the board is Nov. 14, 2016 at 6:00 p.m.
