A Time For Reflection

Fellow Americans,

September 11, 2018 is the 17th anniversary of the 9-11 attack on our nation.  September 17th is Constitution Day.  With these dates in mind, let us reflect on our country and our freedom by reading a few lines from some of our founders. 

Thomas Jefferson:  “We in America do not have government by the majority. We have government by the majority who participate.”  “When the government fears the people, there is liberty. When the people fear the government, there is tyranny.” 

George Washington:  “Government is not reason, it is not eloquence, it is force; like fire, a troublesome servant and a fearful master.  Never for a moment should it be left to irresponsible action.”  “If freedom of speech is taken away, then dumb and silent we may be led, like sheep to the slaughter.”  “To be prepared for war is one of the most effectual means of preserving peace.

James Madison:  “I go on the principle that a public debt is a public curse.”

Patrick Henry:  “The liberties of a people never were, nor ever will be, secure, when the transactions of their rulers may be concealed from them.”

John Adams:  “Statesmen may plan and speculate for liberty but it is religion and morality alone that can establish the principles upon which freedom can securely stand.” 

Alexander Hamilton:  “A fondness for power is implanted, in most men, and it is natural to abuse it, when acquired.”  “A national debt, if it is not excessive, will be to us a national blessing.”  “If it be asked, what is the most sacred duty and the greatest source of our security in a Republic? The answer would be, an inviolable respect for the Constitution and Laws.”

Benjamin Franklin:  “Make yourselves sheep and the wolves will eat you.”  “Freedom is not a gift bestowed upon us by other men, but a right that belongs to us by the laws of God and nature.”  “Man will ultimately be governed by God or by tyrants.”  “When the people find they can vote themselves money, that will herald the end of the republic.”  “Those who would give up essential liberty to purchase a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.
